Do You Remember the Song: “Celebrate Good Times Come On . . .”
September 1st, 2010How do you feel when someone is genuinely happy for you when you succeed? I’m talking about the times when someone sits down and listens to you retell your story of success – really listens, asks questions, looks at you intently. Doesn’t it feel great?
We can get so caught up in our day to day that we don’t listen to our loved ones when they recount their successes. We may say something passive like “that’s nice” but we are not really celebrating with them. The worst thing we can do is to ignore their success and then launch into “listen to what happened to me.”
Don’t you hate it when you go to a dinner party and end up meeting people who go on an on talking about themselves and do not even stop for a moment to ask you something about yourself? What kind of feeling does that behavior generate in you? When we don’t stop to celebrate these are the feelings we generate in our loved ones.
Next time your loved one begins to share a success be sure to stop what you are doing and put yourself in his/her place for a minute. Dinner can wait a few minutes and the other phone call you need to make and dishes you need to wash. Stop to celebrate.
“What do we lose by another’s good fortune? Let us celebrate with them, or strive to emulate them, that should be our desire and determination.”
Sri Sathya Sai Baba
I’ll be back in September
August 20th, 2010Hello everyone,
I am taking a little hiatus for the month of August.
Stop back again in September!
A Look at Your Fellow Inhabitants
August 3rd, 2010I was walking in the park the other day and spent some time admiring a beautiful landscape of flowers. I walked slowly around the area looking at each one. They were red, white, pink, yellow, lavender, deep purple, maroon and orange, some were one inch in diameter and others were three inches in diameter. There were many plants with furry textures and prickly textures.
I walked slowly and took in the flowers rather than rushing by giving each flower a quick glance. I realized I was looking at the flowers the same way I look at paintings at an art exhibit. At an art exhibit I take in the colors and textures and then experience an emotion from what I see or perhaps from the meaning I am applying to what I am seeing in the moment.
I felt really joyful in this beautiful landscape. The landscape architect who designed it did a fantastic job. It was great to be away from my to do list giving myself permission to enjoy the moment looking at the flowers growing on the surface of the planet. I began to think about how although I share the planet with so many beautiful plants and animals I end up spending more of my time completing items on my to do list!
This month my goal is to set aside my to do list a little more often and spend more moments with the natural landscape. I don’t want to miss out.
“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”
Walden, Henry David Thoreau
“I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
